What to expect in your first session

If you have never had counselling before, not knowing what will happen can be one of the hardest parts. Here is exactly how it works, so there are no surprises.

Before We Book Anything

We start with a free 30-minute telephone or online introduction session. You can tell me as much or as little as you would like about what has brought you here, ask me anything about how I work, and get a sense of whether you feel comfortable talking to me. There is no cost and no obligation to book sessions afterwards.

If we both feel it is a good fit, we will agree on a regular day and time for your sessions. If I am not the right counsellor for you, I will try to suggest where else you might look.

Getting Ready

The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. I will ask a little about your background and current circumstances, what has led you to seek counselling now, and what you would like to be different. We will also talk through the practical side — confidentiality and its limits, fees, cancellations, and how we will work together.

You will set the pace: nothing is compulsory to discuss. We may also have some time that we sit in silence, which is fine.

Some people find the first session a relief; others find it tiring or feel they did not say what they meant to. All of that is normal, and we can pick it up next time.

Afterwards

At the end of the session, we will decide together whether to continue. Sessions are weekly and last 50 minutes. Some people come for a few weeks to work on something specific; others stay for longer. You are never committed to a fixed number of sessions, and you are free to stop at any point — though it is usually helpful to have a final session to draw things together.

A Note on Confidentiality

What you bring to counselling stays between us. As a BACP-registered counsellor, I use clinical supervision (identity not shared); exceptions are serious risk of harm or legal requirement. Full details of confidentiality are included in the counselling contract.

CONTACT ME

I will normally reply within one working day so we can arrange your free 30-minute introduction session. There is no obligation to book sessions afterwards - it is simply a chance to talk things through and see whether working together feels right for you. I answer emails from Monday to Friday and do not work at weekends or on bank holidays.

If you need support before I am able to reply, please contact your GP, call the Samaritans free on 116 123 at any time, or dial 999 in an emergency.
